• Winter Sports Off Season/Coaching Contacts: Winter Sports are right around the corner. If you have interest in participating in a winter sport, please reach out to our winter coaches to see what information they have for you regarding any volunteer activities they have going on between now and the official start date or any information they may have regarding tryouts/first official practices. Reminder that you will need to have a valid physical on file before the first official day and that your Final Forms account will need to be up to date.
• SERVE Program at Steele: We’re excited to share about our new senior-only program: SERVE – Students Engaged in Responsible Volunteering and Education. This community service-learning program provides our seniors with a unique and meaningful educational experience while giving back to local social service agencies. Through SERVE, students earn both an English credit and an elective credit, while also achieving the Community Service Graduation Seal and completing a pre-apprenticeship program by graduation. Every Tuesday and Thursday, students volunteer across the community at places like the Amherst Historical Society, ReStore, Main Street Amherst, Nord, Powers, Good Knights of Lorain County, Friendship APL, Murray Ridge, and Oberlin Community Services. At Nord and Powers, they tutor, work one-on-one with students, and assist teachers in the classroom. In addition, students bring their service experiences back into the classroom for weekly discussions, team building, and curriculum connections that tie directly to what they’re learning and seeing in these nonprofit settings. This program truly combines education with impact — preparing our Comets for life beyond graduation while supporting the community we love!
