This page includes key information about daily transportation, bell schedules, and attendance expectations to help students stay organized, on time, and ready to succeed. Transportation to and from Lorain County JVS

Daily transportation to Lorain County JVS is provided by each student’s associate (home) school district. Morning and afternoon bus routes are coordinated through your district’s transportation department, and students typically board from their home high school or designated pickup location.

If your student plans to ride the bus:
Please contact your associate school directly for bus schedules, pickup/drop-off locations, and any district-specific requirements.

Driving to school:
Students who wish to drive themselves must complete the required LCJVS parking permit application and follow all campus parking regulations.

We recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure a smooth start to the day. If you have questions about transportation, please contact your district’s transportation office or the JVS main office for guidance.

Attendance & Absence Guidelines

Lorain County JVS is committed to student success, and that starts with consistent attendance. Below, you'll find all the key details to help your family stay informed and on track.

Ohio Attendance Law – HB 410

Per House Bill 410, students will be monitored for excessive absences:

  • Attendance Notice: Issued after 38+ hours in a month or 65+ hours in a school year (excused or unexcused).

  • Habitual Truant: Triggered at 30 consecutive unexcused hours, 42 in a month, or 72 in a year. Students are referred to an Absence Intervention Team, and may be reported to Juvenile Court if attendance does not improve.

Absences include time missed due to tardiness and early dismissals.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. A phone call is only required if the student will be out for 3 or more consecutive days.

     

  • No. All absences require a written note from a parent/guardian or official documentation to be considered excused.

  • Yes. You will receive an absence alert within 2 hours of your student’s first scheduled class.

     

  • LCJVS students follow the JVS calendar. If the associate school is closed and not providing transportation due to weather, the absence will be excused.

  • Transportation is provided at the discretion of each associate school district.

  • Submit a Preplanned Absence Form in advance to the Attendance Office. Up to 30 hours (5 days) may be approved annually if your student has fewer than 65 hours of excused absences.

Early Dismissal Procedure 

If your student needs to leave early:

  • Call the Attendance Line at 440-774-1051, ext. 44442, or

  • Send a written note with dismissal time and reason. Notes will be verified by phone.

 Please provide at least 1 hour notice. Students will need up to 10 minutes to gather materials and get their dismissal pass.
 No student may leave without a dismissal pass.

 

Preplanned Absences

Used for advance approval of absences that are not automatically excused under Ohio law. Students must:

  1. Complete a Preplanned Absence Form.

  2. Schedule a meeting with an Assistant Principal or Principal.

  3. Receive administrative approval.

Forms are available in the Attendance Office or can be downloaded digital form.

 

What Counts as an Excused Absence?

According to Ohio Revised Code, these reasons are excused with proper documentation:

  • Illness of the student

  • Illness in the family requiring student’s presence

  • Quarantine of the home

  • Death of a relative (up to 18 hours)

  • Medical or dental appointment

  • Observance of a religious holiday

  • College visits

  • Foster care placement or court hearings

  • Homelessness

  • Emergency circumstances approved by the superintendent

Each requires a note from a parent/guardian or official documentation. The school may request a physician or mental health professional’s note for ongoing issues.
